Architectural Plants

When I thought back I realised that I hadn’t been to my favourite nursery, Architectural Plants, for more than ten years. It’s good to be back and to see it looking as inspirational as ever. This is the nursery which started me off and I’m pleased to say that several of the ‘signature’ plants in my garden came from here. These include the magnificent Cabbage Palm in the centre of my lawn which has doubled in size and survived three harsh winters in a row.
Also, the Grevillea Rosemarinifolia, which is supposed to grow to only 5ftX5ft and is nearly twice that size and in perfect health. Behind the Grevillia is a Pinus Patula, now enormous and also in perfect health.

I’ve very fond memories of the help and encouragement which I was given by Angus White, the proprietor, and his team in those early days when I was a complete novice. They filled me with enthusiasm which helped me make something of my garden. Angus deserves credit for being a pioneer of exotica in the early nineties; in those days palm trees and plants such as cannas were very rare indeed- now they can be found in most garden centres.

I was pleased to bump into Angus this morning and chat to him about the way things have changed in the last ten years. He told me that he is much more interested in shape and form nowadays than exotica for its own sake. I think I noticed quite a strong Japanese influence and, incidentally, some of the keenest prices on c”cloud’ trees that I’ve seen anywhere. Once again, Angus is ahead of the trend.
The photo is of their very stylish loo.

    About Slow Life

The idea of Slow Life is to take the principles of Slow Food, which are “good, clean and fair”, and extend them to life in general.

Here in the Lake District, the air is clean, the pace is slow and the atmosphere is calm. If we don’t grow food ourselves, we can buy it in friendly small shops, where you know the quality is going to be the best.

This blog is a celebration of the Slow Life, with forays into the world of design, music, the arts, gardens, and my particular weakness, Japan.
