Mamihlapinatapai

Mamihlapinatapai means “a look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something that they both desire but which neither wants to initiate”. It comes from the Yaghan language, which is used by the natives of Tierra del Fuego, or, to be more accurate, one native of Tierra del Fuego, as there is only one speaker of the language still alive. The word has a place in the Guinness Book of Records, as being the world’s most succinct word- that is the word which contains the most meaning in the fewest letters.

In this Youtube video a young Australian girl with captivating blue eyes explains the meaning of mamihlapinatapai and why she loves the word. The video forms part of a film, soon to be released, called “Life in a Day” which is made up entirely of short videos recorded by ordinary people all over the world saying what was important to them on one particular day, Saturday 24th July 2010. 81,000 videos were submitted. The Australian girl speaks of her regret at the loss of a language which contains this beautiful word. It’s a lovely video and Life in a Day promises to be a lovely film.

Patti Smith- Gloria

“Jesus died for somebody’s sins, not mine”

Is Gloria the best rock song of all time? The original Gloria was written and recorded by Van Morrison in 1964 when he was the lead singer with Them. There is a famous and very dirty cover by The Doors. But Patti Smith’s version, with the opening line, added by herself, “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine” has to be the best. This video shows her singing Gloria on the Jools Holland show in 2007, when she was 61. I can’t find a video of her singing the song when she was in her prime, 30 years before, but if the Jools Holland version is anything to go by it must have been amazing.
This song is crying out for a revival. It needs the power of a Hammond organ backing and two dynamic female lead singers- in other words The Heroes of She.

Hayek vs. Keynes Rap

There’s something wonderful about the fact that a spoof rap video featuring two professors of economics should have attracted more than 2 million plays on Youtube. The video is American, but the two professors were British (one of them naturalised)- perhaps the world’s most important economists- Maynard Keynes and Friedrich von Hayek. Their theories were diametrically opposed and are amusingly portrayed in the video with each protagonist’s views being clearly and accurately presented. If the intention was to teach economics to the rap generation it has succeeded brilliantly. Needless to say, the underdog Hayek is given the best lines.

It’s said that Margaret Thatcher used to take a copy of Hayek’s “The Constitution of Liberty” into cabinet meetings and silence her colleagues by quoting from it. This story has always amused me because the last chapter of that great book is entitled “Why I’m Not a Conservative”. I don’t suppose David Cameron has read it, but if long books aren’t his style and rap videos are, he’d do well to look at this one.

Rinco’s Restaurant

At long last there’s a film to rival Babette’s Feast in the foodie stakes.  The film in its native Japan is called Shokudo Katatsumurai, but the version with English sub-titles is known as ‘Rinco’s Restaurant’.  Rinco lives in a small rural village with her louche mother and a pig. The pig, Hermes, is the mother’s pet, is kept indoors, hogs the sofa and even shares the mother’s bed.  Rinco sets up a restaurant in a glorified shed in the garden. There is only one table in the restaurant and no menu and the food which Rinco cooks has the magical ability to transform people’s lives. In one scene, a widow dressed in black and borne down with misery,  is served course after course during which she is gradually transported out of her misery.  The scene lasts about ten minutes without any dialogue, during which all you see is Rinco preparing each course and the widow eating them. It is utterly charming.

I’m indebted to Mark Schilling of the Japan Times for the information that there’s a thriving sub-culture in Japan of films about women in crisis who find redemption through food.  They include Seagull Restaurant, Flavour of Happiness and Nonchan Noriben.  After enjoying Rinco’s restaurant to much, I can’t wait to get hold of them.

Dylan with Long Blond Hair

We Bob Dylan fans are like battered wives. We know we’re in for a pasting but we keep coming back for more. For some, the abuse began when he went electric. For me it was much later, when he became a born-again Christian. But still we carried on buying his albums, in the hope that amongst the range of blows there would be one sweet kiss. This is what has kept us together over 40 years when I, together with hundreds of thousands of poor deluded souls have bought every album as it came out, in the hope of that one sweet kiss.
Dylan’s release of his 47th album, “Christmas in the Heart” is the final blow. I’ve bought 46 Dylan albums on the trot , but I won’t be buying this one. The album consists of covers of Christmas “favourites” such as The First Noel and Little Drummer Boy. 30 seconds of each track on iTunes was enough. When I was playing it my eleven year old daughter, who is partial to a Christmas record, shouted across the room “Turn it off- it’s torture”.
And so I couldn’t believe it when I read a review in The Times today of a single from the album, “Must be Santa”, which the reviewer describes as “the best Christmas single since Fairytale of New York”. He says the video on Youtube is a sensation and the record is tipped to be the Christmas Number 1. As it turns out, the video is hilariously funny not least because Dylan appears in a long blonde wig, and the song is rather catchy. The old devil’s done it again. By the way, the best ever version of Dylan’s “Wheel’s On Fire” is by the Heroes of She.  They played it at the Dylan Festival in Manchester last year.  They haven’t recorded it yet, so the only way to hear their version is at a live show.

Heroes of She – Burning in Flames

Dozens of singles will be sent out to DJs and producers this week, but none as impressively as the Heroes of She’s “Burning in Flames”, due for release on Bonfire Night. Most media packs consist of the CD in a sleeve with a press release but the Heroes’ has gone out in a beautifully produced folding wallet containing not only the CD but also a 3D video and 3D glasses. The whole caboodle has been designed, produced and despatched by the band themselves. The 3D video, the first ever of its kind, has been viewed over 3,000 times on Youtube.

The single is being released on our own label, Northern Music, based in my office in Hest Bank. If anyone wonders why we are having to do it ourselves, rather than under the wing of one of the major record labels (who control 90% of all record sales) there is a clue in this week’s Chart, as published in Music Week, where most of the album sales are re-releases by established artists. Amazingly, the average age of the top ten artists this week is 53, with every decade represented from the 90’s to the 20’s- viz Vera Lynn (92), Andy Williams (82), Cliff Richard (nudging 70) Barbra Streisand (67) Chris Rea (58), Jay-Z (40), Muse (32) and Dizzee Rascal (24). Exactly 50 years ago the average age of the artists in the top ten (Cliff featured twice in October 1959) was only 24. Back then, it is true that the major labels were guilty of exploiting the young- now they just exploit their back catalogue.
Sorry, you’ll need 3D glasses to enjoy the video above. If you don’t have any here’s a link to their first single “Don’t Love Me”- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWEDeLO_mC0

Campaign to Save the TICs

Slow Life took a turn in the fast lane this week. We have had a quite a coup in getting support for our campaign to save the TICs. After the Westmorland Gazette gave such prominence to my call for public funding to be preserved the story was featured on the Cumbria Radio Breakfast show and on the BBC evening news (see video). Jean Fry, our President, took my place. The Gazette has published today a letter from Ian Stevens the head of Cumbria Tourism pledging full support and I‘ve had similar letters from our MP Tim Farron, from Gareth McKeever the Tory candidate and from Brendon Jameson the Council Leader. It looks as though Lakes Hospitality may have to take over the running of Windermere TIC ourselves and we have put forward a radical proposal to the council. Watch This Space.

Do One Thing

I’ve signed up all the hotels to the Guardian’s 10:10 campaign – to cut energy consumption by 10% in 2010. Some members of staff are already totally enthusiastic about all things green, but we needed to get everyone involved and to get them thinking about their responsibilities and about what they could do on a personal level. The, ‘do one thing’ campaign asks every member of staff to think about their routine and to come up with an idea to help the environment. The idea is that if we all ‘do one thing’ then collectively we can make a difference. With a bribe of a box of fair trade chocolates for the best idea the campaign has been a great success. Everyone has been talking about what they can do and here is a video with some of their ideas.

Nature Raw in Tooth and Claw

Why are these piglets, who are supposed to be enjoying the tranquil slow life in the open air tearing the hell out of each other? The reason is that they have only just met and when two families of piglets are introduced to each other for the first time they have to establish their pecking order. So they spend the first few minutes scrapping violently until they know who’s boss and only then can they relax and enjoy the Slow Life.

58 Pigs in 48 Hours…

3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days ago George the boar had a lucky weekend. 5 of his favourite sows came on heat at the same time.  Here is the result- 58 piglets born in 48 hours. George is a cross between a Gloucester Old Spot and a Saddleback. The sows are Middle White, Saddleback (3) and Tamworth.  The result is a united nations of colours, from pure white to pure black and every colour in between including, most enchantingly, red with black spots. Keep up the good work George.
