The Japanese Slow Life declaration is fascinating. We noticed in our time there how 'happy' the Japanese appeared to be taking every opportunity to smile and laugh and we wondered how much of this really was to do with appearances. A taxi driver (so it must be true) in Kyoto told us "The Japanese are all unhappy" and "the only place people are happy is Bhutan". We didn't have chance to pursue the interesting question of Bhutan with him but his reply to "Why are the Japanese unhappy?" was they are all worried about money.

I remember seeing lots of moss and very Japanesque views on the road between Ambleside and Coniston - the hills/peaks had a nice shape to them

Although I do not doubt that Japan is a safe country, especially in comparison to the US, I do wonder how those 1 million lawyers in America are evidence of everything in America becoming illegal. Just the other day, 40,000 new state and federal laws hit the books in the United States, not to mention a tax code that is over 73,000 pages.

With "freedom" like that, no wonder there are so many lawyers.

How interesting. We visited the Moss garden in November the moss looked much greener and lusher then - quite a change in a month. I found it quite stunning but
that was in part because of the vibrant sprinkles of colour provided by the Japanese maples lighting up the scene. It is interesting what you say about the monks greed - we did feel that the exorbitant entrance fees to visit the various temples were a bit on the grasping side, although in this case it did keep the visitors numbers down. In Nikko we were charged a general entrance to the temples and then they wanted to charge us again to see some of the more famous shrines. Given the friendliness and helpfulness we encountered everywhere else this 'greed' seemed a little out of character. But that is probably the only slightly sour note of our whole holiday as all else was quite wonderful.

I hate it when the waiters are around you all the time, especially when shadowing you while you eat . It feels fake , it feels too much, it is annoying. I dont like the way of japanese hospitality (at least at their restaurants).
Sorry for my poor english.

You can rather see why people don't want housing on their doorstep, from this programme: Kevin McCloud's housing was shown to be towering over someone's garden with a view right on to it. End of their privacy.

Sad bit to me was the social engineering attempt which meant the design shrank private gardens in favour of public gardens and unfenced front gardens - all in the interest of trying to make people into a 'community'. Could people possibly decide for themselves how communal they would like to be?
