Heroes of She – Burning in Flames

Dozens of singles will be sent out to DJs and producers this week, but none as impressively as the Heroes of She’s “Burning in Flames”, due for release on Bonfire Night. Most media packs consist of the CD in a sleeve with a press release but the Heroes’ has gone out in a beautifully produced folding wallet containing not only the CD but also a 3D video and 3D glasses. The whole caboodle has been designed, produced and despatched by the band themselves. The 3D video, the first ever of its kind, has been viewed over 3,000 times on Youtube.

The single is being released on our own label, Northern Music, based in my office in Hest Bank. If anyone wonders why we are having to do it ourselves, rather than under the wing of one of the major record labels (who control 90% of all record sales) there is a clue in this week’s Chart, as published in Music Week, where most of the album sales are re-releases by established artists. Amazingly, the average age of the top ten artists this week is 53, with every decade represented from the 90’s to the 20’s- viz Vera Lynn (92), Andy Williams (82), Cliff Richard (nudging 70) Barbra Streisand (67) Chris Rea (58), Jay-Z (40), Muse (32) and Dizzee Rascal (24). Exactly 50 years ago the average age of the artists in the top ten (Cliff featured twice in October 1959) was only 24. Back then, it is true that the major labels were guilty of exploiting the young- now they just exploit their back catalogue.
Sorry, you’ll need 3D glasses to enjoy the video above. If you don’t have any here’s a link to their first single “Don’t Love Me”- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWEDeLO_mC0

Ludovic Kennedy

Ludovic_Kennedy
One of my heroes, Ludovic Kennedy has died aged 89. He was best known as a campaigner against miscarriages of justice – exposing corrupt policemen complacent judges and the unfairness of the adversarial system of justice. His book, 10 Rillington Place, about Timothy Evans who was hanged for a murder he didn’t commit was influential in ending capital punishment in this country. Which reminds me that, disgracefully, Barak Obama even though he says he agrees that capital punishment is not a deterrent, is nevertheless in favour of it because it, “sends out the right message”. Sir Ludovic was also well known as an atheist. As a good child he had said his prayers every night but as a teenager gave up since ‘no-one was listening’. His father, he presumed, knelt as usual to pray the night before his ship was blown up by the Germans. Sir Ludovic wrote with clear logic, he was never strident he was always good humoured and I can’t think of any modern campaigner with anything like his compassion or ability.

Campaign to Save the TICs

Slow Life took a turn in the fast lane this week. We have had a quite a coup in getting support for our campaign to save the TICs. After the Westmorland Gazette gave such prominence to my call for public funding to be preserved the story was featured on the Cumbria Radio Breakfast show and on the BBC evening news (see video). Jean Fry, our President, took my place. The Gazette has published today a letter from Ian Stevens the head of Cumbria Tourism pledging full support and I‘ve had similar letters from our MP Tim Farron, from Gareth McKeever the Tory candidate and from Brendon Jameson the Council Leader. It looks as though Lakes Hospitality may have to take over the running of Windermere TIC ourselves and we have put forward a radical proposal to the council. Watch This Space.

Do One Thing

I’ve signed up all the hotels to the Guardian’s 10:10 campaign – to cut energy consumption by 10% in 2010. Some members of staff are already totally enthusiastic about all things green, but we needed to get everyone involved and to get them thinking about their responsibilities and about what they could do on a personal level. The, ‘do one thing’ campaign asks every member of staff to think about their routine and to come up with an idea to help the environment. The idea is that if we all ‘do one thing’ then collectively we can make a difference. With a bribe of a box of fair trade chocolates for the best idea the campaign has been a great success. Everyone has been talking about what they can do and here is a video with some of their ideas.

Nature Raw in Tooth and Claw

Why are these piglets, who are supposed to be enjoying the tranquil slow life in the open air tearing the hell out of each other? The reason is that they have only just met and when two families of piglets are introduced to each other for the first time they have to establish their pecking order. So they spend the first few minutes scrapping violently until they know who’s boss and only then can they relax and enjoy the Slow Life.

Fast Food the Slow Life Way…

Corn 3 Corn 4
Time required:10 minutes.
1 – Fill a large pan with cold water and put it on the hob.
2 – Go into the garden and pick two ears of sweetcorn.
3 – Take off the outer casing, rinse and put the cobs into the water which will have just come to the boil.
4 – After 4 minutes remove and put onto the plate.
Serve with butter.
Because the sugars won’t have had time to turn to starch the corn will be amazingly sweet.

Mushrooms

Mushroom picking[1]
How would you rather spend your Sunday morning? Traipsing around Tescos? Or foraging for free food in a pine forest? This is the mushroom season and we spent this morning picking ceps, otherwise known as porcini and other edible fungi. This is the real slow life food, perfectly in season and what’s more – free. We were taught the art of mushroom picking by Peter Pastucha who couldn’t believe the English indifference to this amazing crop. In his native Poland families will be up at dawn and the woods will be full of foragers. Here we didn’t see a single other soul all morning. The picture is of our daughter sara holding some ceps with the wood in backround and some of our pigs in between.

58 Pigs in 48 Hours…

3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days ago George the boar had a lucky weekend. 5 of his favourite sows came on heat at the same time.  Here is the result- 58 piglets born in 48 hours. George is a cross between a Gloucester Old Spot and a Saddleback. The sows are Middle White, Saddleback (3) and Tamworth.  The result is a united nations of colours, from pure white to pure black and every colour in between including, most enchantingly, red with black spots. Keep up the good work George.
